The theme of our 12th supper club at Brockham Village Hal, Brockham, Surrey 3rd June 2023 is: Sir Edward Elgar - Last Master of the King’s Musick!
Worcester’s greatest son, Sir Edward Elgar, OM was born in the rural village of Lower Broadheath on 2, June 1857, about four miles from the city of Worcester in England, where he died on 23, February 1934.
Through all the complexities of this man’s life, it should be noted that from humble beginnings, Edward Elgar rose to an enduring celebrity status. His remarkable accomplishments, predominantly as a self-taught composer of rich and diverse romantic, yet modernist music, have left a profound and indelible legacy in the history of English music.
Sir Edward Elgar left the cultural world with an extraordinary legacy ~ music that touches the soul! He also left an astonishing personal history. Elgar was a gifted counter-culture genius, whose life and music embraced a mix of romance, chivalry and British colonial sensibilities. With incredible insight, sensitivity, and through hard work and dedication, Sir Edward produced a body of work that transcended the circumstances of his birth, embracing everything from pathos to exhilaration, appealing to listeners of all ages and at all levels of society.
Believe it, or not, Sir Edward Elgar was as famous in his day as The Beatles were in theirs. He was not only the first composer to record the London Symphony Orchestra at the world famous Abbey Road Studios, but actually cut the ribbon at the studio's grand opening ceremony in 1931. Streets, a cigarette brand and a locomotive were named after him and his look, with his bushy ‘walrus’ moustache epitomised the fashion of the age in which he lived.
The event includes audio/visual and live entertainment. We will be joined by Members of the Primrose Piano Quartet, who will perform some of Elgar's most endearing miniatures for piano and violin.
Once again, our Master of Ceremonies, Chevalier Richard Winter-Stanbridge will direct the evening, Chef in Residence, Mary Ince will conjure up a feast appropriate to our composer, reflecting on his particular Englishness and his music from the romantic to the bombastic! Our sommelier, Corinna Osbourne-Patterson will curate thematic English wines and cider for the occasion.
